Raising the standard of healthcare and education in Eastern Europe, particularly Romania
From 1991 to 1998 many tonnes of medical equipment and materials were sent to the children’s hospital Clinica Pediatrie I ‘Axente Iancu’ in Cluj-Napoca. Since 1997, the CSEF has maintained a computerised Drugs and Poisons Advice Centre at the hospital. This has been made possible by the generous support of Micromedex, Inc. that has been supplying the most modern databases. Specific medication for a sick child has been kindly provided by Celltech Pharmaceuticals.
Very large quantities of medical items especially for elderly patients were delivered to GP practices and to individuals in Cluj-Napoca from 1993 to 2001. Batches of appropriate medical equipment and supplies were also sent to GP practices in rural areas. The CSEF is now assessing the vocational training needs of Romanian GPs.
Many tonnes of medical laboratory equipment have been delivered to thirteen different medical laboratories, mostly in Cluj-Napoca. Emphasis was given to staff safety and improvement of the analytic procedures being used in each laboratory.
